How do we help our children develop self-discipline?   There are four areas we can promote to help our children live a peaceful life.

Respect

Respect should be given and expected in return.  Children work very hard gaining skills in everyday life.  It is important to set clear and realistic expectations along with demonstrating our understanding that it might take them a bit longer or mistakes may happen along the way.

Remember to acknowledge them when they are doing something right, “Thank you for walking to the table and sitting down for dinner” or “I see you put your napkin in your lap”.

Problem Solving Skills

Problem solving skills are an asset to everyone.  Start by providing simple choices so when a problem occurs you can identify that there is a problem, clarify the problem, look at possible solutions and decide upon the best course of action.  We also need to reevaluate if the course of action was a good choice.

Patience

Patience is a virtue in many circumstances.  Having the ability to wait and not expect immediate gratification is a learned skill.  We need to provide opportunities for our children to practice waiting.  You can also assist them by helping them pass the time, such as, let’s sing a song while we wait or play I spy with my little eye.

Acknowledging Feelings

Finally, acknowledging feelings aides in the awareness of our child’s own emotions and the awareness of others.  Help your child articulate feelings of frustration, anger, happiness and nervousness.  It is also helpful to point out nonverbal cues such as, looking at a person’s face and reading the emotion they are exhibiting.

All of these aspects of giving our children respect, along with helping them learn to solve problems, being patient and acknowledging feelings, aides our children on their path towards internal discipline.
