Montessori Radmoor

Self-esteem is not something that can be spoon fed and is not based on what someone says to you.  Self-esteem is developed over time and is based on knowing how to do something that benefits yourself and others.   How do we foster this in our children?

Children need opportunities to do things for themselves when they are developmentally appropriate and/or when they can do it themselves.   We, as adults, must be careful to allow the child to try, make mistakes and learn from their mistakes and practice to gain the skill.

If a young child can listen and follow directions and if you have the tools that are safe and work, then take the time to show them a new task that will contribute to your household community.  Giving the child real tasks, such as cutting up fruit for dinner,  setting the table for dinner,  washing windows or dusting will help the child develop a sense of self-worth.

A note to remember:  Never do for a child that which he can do for himself.  Do not “eat their soup”.

Further reading on this topic and other parenting topics can be found on line at www.kidstalknewsletter.com .   Maren Schmidt writes regular blogs that are practical for parents and coincide beautifully with the Montessori philosophy.    Also, we will be distributing the Small Hands Catalog and will be coordinating a school order.

Montessori Small Hands Catalog provides materials to assist you at home in order to help your child gain independence and allow them to participate as a member of the family.  Whether it is smaller items for cooking, a snow shovel for the winter or an arts and crafts activity that promotes learning, I am sure you will find something in this catalog for your child.

Sincerely,

Susie
