International Night! One of the most anticipated events of the school year.

Every year, in September, I get asked by the older friends in the classroom what we are going to be for International Night. They eagerly anticipate the day when they find out which continent our classroom will transform into in mid-May, which continent they are going to get to research in depth and what exciting projects they are going to get to work on. Of course, the younger friends, who haven’t gotten to experience International Night in the classroom yet, get caught up in the excitement very quickly as they hear all the stories from International Nights past.

This year, we are going to represent Africa. Over the next few months, we will spend time learning about the continent of Africa, its landforms, its people, its plants and animals. The older friends will also be choosing areas they are interested in studying. The younger friends are going to be working together on creating various projects that will be used in the room on that day. We will be reading stories from Africa and facts about Africa. We will also be working on an Africa inspired art project that will be auctioned off during the International Night Festivities.

Of course, International Night always comes together so wonderfully because of our parent volunteers. We need parents to help with the projects during the afternoons. This could involve painting, sewing, cutting and gluing. We also need parents to help us transform the room on the day of the event. If you like coordinating events, we also need someone to oversee all the volunteer work. If you would like to help out in any way, please contact our classroom volunteers Cho and Tracey. We’d love to hear any ideas you might have to make learning about Africa even more exciting for our classroom.

International Night is just part of all the excitement that is already happening in the classroom. Friends are hard at work practicing their reading, mastering their letter sounds and trying to figure out how to do addition with and without concrete material. I am always excited to discuss all the wonderful lessons we are working on during conferences. Student conferences are on March 10th and 11th. The sign-up sheet is on iVolunteer. I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Sincerely,

Archana
