HOME RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE PRIMARY CHILD

The child constantly strives to become a contributing and respected member of his environment; be it the classroom or the home. In the classroom the child takes on responsibilities for himself and later for others as he grows and develops more skills. The classroom provides the child with ample opportunities and resources to become self-reliant and independent.

Beginning at a young age, the child can take on some responsibilities at home so he feels a sense of ownership and belonging. The responsibilities for the child can include helping with preparing meals, laundry and yard work. The degree to which the child contributes can vary with age and skills acquired. Here are some ways in which your child can participate:

  • Sort, fold and put away laundry.
  • Water the plants.
  • Dust and sweep small areas at a time.
  • Feed family pets.
  • Clean their own room by putting away books and toys or making their bed.
  • Ready their outerwear, clothing, and backpack for the next day.
  • Set the table at meal times.
  • Help with loading and unloading the dishwasher.
  • Tear lettuce, peel and cut vegetables.
  • Measure ingredients for cooking or baking.
  • Pack (or assist you in packing) their lunch for school.
  • Pick up leaves and sticks outside, rake leaves and pull weeds.

Encourage your child to contribute in any way and as much as they can. Avoid doing anything for them that you know they can already do for themselves.

It is getting cold outside and we have already had our first encounter with SNOW! Please make sure your child has appropriate outerwear (coats, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens) so we can continue to avail of our outdoor environment, temperatures permitting of course. Your child can pack all these things into his/her backpack to bring to school. Please make sure their outerwear is easy enough for them to dress in independently or with minimal assistance.
