Happy 5th Birthday to Dylan!

Many children love to work with the polishing materials. In our class we have metal polishing, wood polishing, glass and shoe polishing. Each different type of polishing material has its own color so the children can distinguish between them.  The children learn how to put the apron on and how to set up the materials on their table. There is an exact order that the materials are laid out across the top of their work space. I will show them how to do this when I give the first lesson to a child.

After a child has set up his space he can pick objects from around the class to polish. Many children like to polish the silver and brass animals with the metal polishing. When a child chooses the glass polishing material it is usually used to clean our small mirror. When the child has finished polishing the object he can place it on any shelf so that everyone can see how it shines! Usually, the children are very proud of how they made the objects shine. There is also a specific process or steps to cleaning up the polishing materials. When a child receives this lesson, he will learn where the dirty cloths and materials go, where to wash the bowl and how to put the materials in the box.

The polishing materials require the children to remember the order and the purpose of each item. The lesson follows a logical sequence of steps that the children have to remember and do. This material helps with fine motor coordination, especially when using the eye dropper to squeeze the polish out of the bottle and to squeeze just enough (not too much) polish into the bowl.

The polishing materials are used for the purpose of caring for our environment. It is also interesting to see how the different aged children use the polishing materials. The younger children may see the material on the shelf and decide they want to polish when the older children will see an item on the shelf that is in need of polishing and then choose to clean it. Children will do this work to help create a beautiful classroom for everyone to enjoy.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Parents,

The kindergarten aged children (5 years going on 6) have been getting ready for reading buddies and are very excited for it! Reading buddies is when the kindergartners get to choose a book to read to an elementary child and the elementary child will read to them. We are able to visit both the upper and lower elementary classrooms for this activity and it lasts about 20 minutes. We will end up visiting about four times total before the kindergarten aged children start visiting lower elementary in the mornings.

I would also like to welcome Dishan who has started visiting our community! He will be transitioning from Ms. Kristy’s classroom over the next couple of weeks.

One new song we have been singing is called Down by the Bay. The children have been very excited to help come up with parts of the song. They think about words that rhyme and we put them into the song. Below in italics are some examples of what the children have come up with.

Down by the bay,

Where the watermelon grows

Back to my home, I dare not go

For if I do my mother would say

*Did you ever see a frog holding a log

Down by the bay

*Did you ever see a cat taking a nap

*Did you ever see an ant wearing pants

Have a wonderful weekend!
