Montessori Radmoor

Greetings!

Here we are in the midst of the holiday season- how quickly time is flying by!

We started off this season with a very special visit from Paola Leon, Lucas’ mother.  Paola came into the classroom to share a “thanksgiving” story with the children.  The book was about being thankful for nature around us, and all the beauty and sustenance it provides.  We talked about things we are thankful for and reflected on many things, including our health.  Paola shared with the children that there was a boy that would be hospital bound for the holidays and he would love to receive some cards while there. The children had such a wonderful time, and made numerous cards for him to open on his Christmas.  This idea, this feeling of giving, and not receiving, is so powerful.  While they made the cards they talked about how happy he would be to receive their gifts, how good it might make him feel.  Later we talked about how the feelings we share when we give or help someone are so much greater, more gratifying, than to simply always receive.

Our month of November has been filled with various discussions about families, the basic needs that we have: food, shelter and clothing, and lots of shared conversations about how to make, treat and have a friend.  Each day holds new opportunities to practice the essence of friendship.

We focus a great deal of time and energy on building community and communication skills.  It’s essential to continue to develop our verbal skills and learn to listen to each other. These lifelong skills may not begin before children reach this age, and all of us can be reminded how to listen to each other.

Brr….

As November comes to a close, I would like to remind you that we go outside every day – this means having snow pants and gloves and hats.  If you need to practice with your child the art of putting those things on, that would be great.  The more independent the children are, the more time we can enjoy outside, playing in the snow and enjoying the cold.   It helps if the children recognize their own outdoor clothing, and labeling items help us connect children with their boots.

In other building news, the elementary program will hold its annual December music program at the school the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 13th at 6:30 p.m.  All are welcome and it will give our parents a glimpse of the opportunities in elementary.

As a reminder, the school bake sale will be held Monday-Wednesday, December 4th-6th.  All money will be used by the elementary classes to purchase gifts for children in foster care throughout Ingham County.  This time-honored tradition is an excellent way to teach children about shopping for others and giving of time.  Bake sale items can be purchased at drop off and pick up in the lobby. Thank you for your support.

As we have said, it is especially gratifying to give, and at this time of year, people often ask us how they can give to our classroom.  I am working on a “wish list” if you desire to give to our classroom community.  It’s not expected or required that families give, but if you wish to, our classroom can use items to do projects that our children will enjoy.  Of course the greatest gift that Michelle, Leslie and I can receive is seeing your children learn and grow each day.

Best, Trish
