Happy February!

What a beautiful start to the month with all that snow! I truly love the snow and the crisp weather of winter. We have been having such an fun time on our playground these last couple of weeks pulling each other around in the sleds and sliding down that icy hill. I have enjoyed watching some of our older children pull the younger ones around and around. How proud those older children are of themselves for physically being able to pull the younger ones, and how happy those younger children are to have the ride from an older friend! When I observe this activity on the playground, I see our children living and learning in an active community- happy to share and teach what they know with each other. I see the love and admiration shared between that older and younger child, they share a brotherhood, a beautiful connection.

And so we find ourselves in this month of Love. Each year in the classroom, right around this time, we discuss the Heart. We talk about what the heart is, what it does and why it is connected to Valentine’s Day- the children always have so much to share about what they feel love is and how they show it. This year in our community, due to our winter break, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 12th. We have a special snack and the children exchange valentines. For our exchange, please make sure that your child has enough valentines for ALL the children in our class- a total of 27 children. The valentines do NOT need to be addressed to a specific child, as many of the children distributing are not yet readers. We will be working on their valentine bags this week to prepare for our special day.

Culturally, February is such an amazing month. Chinese New Year is approaching fast! If there is anyone that would be interested in coming in and sharing a story, some history, a craft, or some yummy food with us, we would love it!! Please let me know if you are interested. Likewise, it is Black HIstory Month! Anyone interested in sharing some stories, photos and accomplishments of African-Americans in our community or elsewhere, famous or lesser-known, we would love to have you.

The month of May seems a long way off right now, while we are digging ourselves out from under the drifts, but for our community it is rapidly approaching! We are already starting to look to our biggest event of the year – International Night. Our community will be celebrating and portraying the continent of Africa this year. As we get closer , any ideas you might have, any decorations or cultural items that we could borrow, or any time you have to help with preparations to the event will be greatly appreciated!! As always, thanks for reading.

Please watch your email for messages regarding March conferences, as they are fast approaching! Enjoy the month of February with warm hearts in our wonderland of snow!

Peace, Trish
