A common question I get throughout the year is, “What are some activities I can do at home with my toddler to support what you are doing at school?”  There are so many activities that your child would love to be involved with at home.

When I think of children at this age I try to remember that they are coming out of a period in their life where they have watched things being done for them and to them. Now with so much more independence and ability, the toddler child just wants to participate in everyday life! It may be something as simple as letting your child walk from the car to house/school. Even the youngest toddlers love to carry things. Why not include them in putting away items from the grocery store. Your child may enjoy cleaning windows or the front of the refrigerator. You can provide him with a small spray bottle and a drying cloth.

Toddlers love kitchen activities. Could your toddler tear lettuce into a small bowl? Wash apples in the sink? Children love to mix and knead bread and cookies. Could your child help to set the table? Napkins and spoons etc . . Sure it won’t be perfect, but they will be on the table.

What about your pets? Could your child help to scoop pet food into dishes? Allow your child to help you in the laundry room. Young children, often with an adult to assist, can be expected to pick up unused toys and put them in the proper place. Low shelves are easy for children to reach, as well as help to take care of their things. These activities not only develop gross motor control, coordination and strength, but help to increase confidence and develop self worth. If you would like to read more about home responsibilities for the two and three year old, I have a lovely list that I am happy to pass along. Just let me know.

One other note, since February is here, Valentines Day must be coming up. Please know that the toddlers don’t exchange valentines. Instead the children will be making Valentines to bring home, as well as some tasty treats to share that day at snack!

Sincerely,

Ms. Erin
