Montessori Radmoor

Hello All,

You may have noticed as you are dropping off in the morning, or perhaps you are fully involved in it, but WOW is toilet training in high gear in our toddler community. It seems that all of a sudden the children are all showing signs of readiness to learn how to use the toilet. Some of these signs include, interest or curiosity in what’s happening in the bathroom, staying dry for longer periods of time and the ability to dress and undress themselves. We are so happy to assist in this process.

The time when your child is at school is a great time to practice wearing underwear. At school we have an orderly bathroom with a consistent routine. The children are always encouraged to sit on the toilet. They also have the opportunity to see the older children using the bathroom correctly. Everything your child needs to use the toilet is available to them such as, access to a small toilet, sinks for hand washing, and extra clothes when needed.

At home, when your child is actively toilet training, some of the things you can do to support this process are to have a simple potty chair in the bathroom, establish a consistent routine of when your child is encouraged to use the bathroom (before bed, after lunch etc. . . ). It is also important for a child to have the opportunity to connect the sensation of a full bladder with the release of urine. Disposable diapers and pull ups can hinder this process. Often when a child wears the disposable type of diaper, they never feel they are wet. Cloth diapers or underwear allow a child to feel wet. A child can then understand that this feeling of wetness is uncomfortable and should be changed right away. She then learns that it is normal to feel clean and dry. Another fun activity is to go to the store and pick out the underwear with your child.

At school we are also reading a lot of books about the process of toilet training.   You can go to your local library and check out some books, or buy one from the bookstore. Also, we like to be consistent with what you are doing at home, so please let me know if and when your child starts to wear underwear or is using the toilet at home, so we can encourage the same.

It is also important to remember that there will be misses (wet clothes, accidents etc. . .). This is normal, and it’s important to remain relaxed and positive. I have a nice book on the process of learning to us the toilet that I would be happy to lend out to any interested families. It’s a very quick book, only about 20 pages and has some great advice. As always, I am happy to talk with you about the process, perhaps at March conferences. The sign up is located at ivolunteer which can be accessed through our school website.

Thanks, Erin
