Baby it’s cold outside!  With the colder weather approaching I thought it would be a great time to discuss cold weather gear and your toddler. As it continues to get colder and colder, the thought of dressing toddlers to stay warm can strike fear into the bravest of hearts. Last year’s clothes may not fit and unless you have hand me downs, you’ll probably be looking for some new outdoor gear. Some of the items you’ll want to send to school with your child include jackets, hats, boots, mittens and snow pants. We do try to get out often, even if it’s cold, so having these items ready to wear is really handy.

JACKETS: Many young children really don’t like to feel bulky, but it’s really important to keep them warm because their skin is so thin and their organs are so small. This time of year is great to practice wearing layers. If putting on extra clothes becomes a part of your routine, there should be fewer objections when the clothing bulks up.

MITTENS: Oh! what a pain toddler mittens can be. Most mittens are too short and snow will get between the cuff and jacket. Most are also too bulky, so the toddlers can’t do anything with their hands. No wonder they end up getting torn off. If it’s not too cold I actually like the cheap dollar store type of mittens because they are flexible, not too bulky, and usually kids will keep them on. Because of the inevitable snow, if you are looking for new snow mittens, keep in mind that less bulky is better and look for mittens that have a longer cuff. If all else fails, my go to, is a long pair of wool socks! Another helpful tip is the old mittens on a string through the coat sleeves.

SNOWPANTS: These are a must for cold Michigan winters. Many parents have chosen to leave a pair of snow pants at school and keep another pair at home. You could also make sure that a pair of snow pants is always kept in their backpacks. Please feel free to bring these in at any time as we will wear them for cold days as well as snowy days. I prefer the bib/overall type of snow pants, as opposed to plain pant style. I think the bib/overall style keeps the toddlers warmer and there is less chance of getting snow inside the coat or pants.

BOOTS: These are another must for cold weather. Hopefully, you can find boots that are warm, waterproof and that your child can walk easily in. Boots are also great for days that are cold (but not necessarily snowy).

Please feel free to share any brands, tips or tricks you’ve found to help with the winter gear drama! For example I really like the brand “BOGS” boots. Also, surprisingly, “CROCS” make some nice waterproof boots.

Stay warm!

Erin
